Finding the perfect vintage furniture can be such a fun and rewarding experience. When you are looking to transform a room in your home, or maybe to add a particular piece to finish off a project you have been working on, going shopping for vintage furniture is exciting – but it can also be daunting to know what approach to take!  In this article we will explore some helpful tips that will help you in conquering how to find the perfect vintage furniture (and showcase some of my work too which you may be interested in!)

How to find your perfect vintage furniture...

  1. Define your style
  2. Research that style
  3. Set your budget
  4. Explore sources
  5. Be patient!

1. Define your style:

Before you start shopping for vintage furniture, you may want to have a clear idea of the style you’re looking for. Do you prefer mid-century modern, industrial, Art Deco, or Victorian? Getting clear on your style preferences will help you narrow down your search.

Don’t forget that though that if you don’t want to define a specific style that can also be ok! Maybe your room setting takes a more eclectic approach (which I love by the way) and you just want to find the perfect piece when it speaks to you. Researching styles will help you to build your wish list when it comes to getting out there and shopping.

2. Research that style:

Once you know what style you’re looking for, you can start researching the history and characteristics of that particular style.

This will help you identify authentic vintage pieces and avoid purchasing reproductions. It will also help you to narrow down the different styles that exist within that overall aesthetic – some style genres are pretty vast!

Great places to explore styles include Pinterest, House Beautiful Magazine, Google and Instagram.

3: Set your budget:

Getting clear on what you want to invest in your piece is important, as it will dictate the suppliers you explore, and it will help you when planning if you look at bespoke commissioning.

There is a common misconception that vintage furniture means cheap – when in fact it can be a significant investment into the interior of your home. Be wary of cheap vintage suppliers as this could be more likely to be reproductions.

I believe in transparent pricing when working with my clients on bespoke vintage furniture art commissions. It gives you the confidence in your investment without a bunch of hidden costs that can get really frustrating.

4: Explore Sources:

There are a variety of places that sell vintage furniture. They are not all made the same! When exploring how to find the perfect vintage furniture in terms of sources, make sure you look for:

  • Alignment – do you feel a connection to the brand selling the furniture?
  • Reputation – do they have positive recommendations, reviews and case studies?
  • Bespoke or Ready Made – find out if they create on a commission basis or just have ready to sell items
  • Process – do they have a good process for sales, delivery and aftercare?

As a specialist furniture painting artist I work with you to take bespoke commissions that create completely unique pieces just for you. That means you can really find that perfect vintage furniture item that will work with your space, your style and most importantly your vision!

If you are buying ready made, make sure you clue up on quality and condition checks to make so that you don’t get caught out by items which look great at first look but may be actually problematic.

5: Be patient!

Finding the perfect vintage furniture piece may take time and persistence. I really recommend embracing the process and you will be so richly rewarded! I have a range of “naked” pieces ready for commission right now, and I also offer a sourcing service if you have a specific style in mind.
